About the Department

The department of geography of Thakur Prasad Singh college (Patna) was established by Professor (Dr.) Nawal Kishore Singh in January 1993 with intermediate and Under graduate programme. Since 2024 only under graduate programme is taken care of though the inclusion of post graduate programme is under process.

Vision Statement of the Department

The Department of Geography envisions, creating a centre of excellence that fosters a deep understanding of the spatial relationship between humans and the environment. The core vision is to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to face future challenges and emerge as leaders. Its vision includes:

  • Preparing students to address global challenges such as climate change, urbanization, resource management, rural development and sustainable agriculture etc.

  • Fostering an environment that inspires intellectual growth and a sense of responsibility toward both the nation and the world.

The mission is centered on holistic development and social equity aligned with a comprehensive geographical education that balances theory with practical application:

  • Innovation & Creativity: Nurturing students to think critically and approach problems with new perspectives.
  • Social Responsibility: Integrating a global perspective while maintaining a deep sense of justice and ethical leadership.
  • Accessibility: Providing quality education primarily to the underprivileged and those from rural areas or weaker sections of society.
  • Geospatial literacy: To train students in modern techniques including GIS, cartography, field survey etc.
  • Research and inquiry: To encourage students to conduct local field studies that highlight the socio-economic and physical landscape of Bihar.
  • Inclusivity: To ensure that geographical knowledge is accessible to students from rural areas, helping understand resource management, environmental planning etc.
Genesis of the Department with Achievements
  • The Department of Geography has been an integral part of the social science faculty of Thakur Prasad Singh College since January 1993. Earlier the college was affiliated with Magadh university but since 2018 it is affiliated with Patliputra university, Patna.
  • The department has well equipped Geography lab, which is essential for practical training in map-making, surveying etc.
  • The department consistently produces graduates who pursue advanced studies like M.A, Ph.D., Urban Planning, Civil services etc.
Details Of Ongoing Programmes (U.G.)

Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, we are moving towards a holistic and multidisciplinary framework that promotes flexibility, creativity and experiential learning. NEP encourages our students to design their own academic pathways-fostering innovation, skill development and adaptability in a rapidly changing world.

The department currently focuses on undergraduate excellence while participating in the college’s broader academic framework as: B.A (Major) Geography, B.A (minor) Geography and B.A (MDC) Geography. A four-year program focusing on physical geography, human geography, environmental geography, economic geography, regional geography and regional planning, cartography, Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System, Field surveying techniques etc.
